ASCE 7 -16 updates

The information provided below pertains only to wind load calculations, making reference specifically to the components and cladding section of the ASCE 7-16.

 Updates that apply to Miscellaneous Structures (i.e. tanks, silos, rooftop equipment, etc.) is as follows:

  • Value of “Kd” update. Reference: Table 26.6-1 (pg.266)

 Updates that apply to wall openings and roofs (i.e. shutters, windows, doors, sun roofs, etc., & all roof types) is as follows:

  • Internal Pressure Coefficient, “GCpi” update. Reference: Table 26-13-1 (pg.271)

Updates that apply to mean roof heights up to 30 feet is as follows:

  • Adjustment Factor “B” update. Reference: Figure 30.4-1 (pg.362)

 Partially Open is a new (moderate) internal pressure coefficient (GCpi) added to Table 26.13-1 where GCpi = +/- 0.18.

 Specific to roofs

The roofs section of the ASCE 7-16 has drastically changed. The zones have been defined better which is great for everyone. The Gable and Hip Roofs are completely independent, where they were combined for some specific roof angles.

Gable Roofs

There are more defined zones and division of roof angle categories with the Gable Roofs. For the roof angle categories, 7° < θ ≤ 27° (ASCE 7-10) has been split to 7° < θ ≤ 20° & 20° < θ ≤ 27°. For the zones it has expanded from zones 1, 2, 3 (ASCE 7-10) to zones, 1, 2, 3, 1’, 2e, 2n, 3e, 2r, 3r.

Hip Roofs

There are more defined zones and division of roof angle categories with the Hip Roofs. For the roof angle categories, 7° < θ ≤ 27° (ASCE 7-10) has been split to 7° < θ ≤ 20° & 20° < θ ≤ 27°. For the zones it has expanded from zones 1, 2, 3 (ASCE 7-10) to zones, 1, 2e, 2r, 3.

 For wind load pressures at heights above 60 feet (reference Figure 30.5-1, pg.363)

Applicable to roofs where θ ≤ 7° (vs. 10° in ASCE 7-10)
